Black Bear Drawings
August 2, 2025

Gouache painting on paper.

This painting is of Sheela (BBF004), one of the bears in Borderlands Research Institute’s ongoing study of black bear populations in the Trans-Pecos region of Texas. Sheela spends most of her time along the cliffs of the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park.

BRI graduate Nicole Dickan graciously offered some of her time and expertise during my BBNP art residency to share information about her work with BRI’s bear projects along with details about the individual bears she encountered and observed along the way.
